Jess Kelly’s blind audition on The Voice Australia began with a sound all four coaches immediately found familiar.
The 38-year-old performed Cold Chisel’s When the War Is Over, a song also famously recorded by his uncle, Australian music legend John Farnham.
The coaches praised Jess’s vocal ability and remarked on his striking similarity to Farnham. Yet when the performance ended on Tuesday, August 18, not one chair had turned.
Even the opportunity for a late rescue passed when secret fifth coach Tones and I decided not to save him.
The support that brought Jess to the stage
Although Farnham was not present for the audition, his role in Jess’s journey reportedly began well before his nephew stepped onto the stage.
A source described as close to the family told New Idea that Farnham had encouraged Jess to audition and pursue his own ambitions in music.
That made the outcome particularly unexpected.
“John was shocked that none of the coaches turned their chairs for Jess,” the source claimed.
Jess had grown up watching his famous uncle perform, but he was aware that their vocal similarities could bring additional pressure. Before the audition, he acknowledged that comparisons with Farnham were likely.

The resemblance quickly became one of the central talking points among the coaches.
Richard Marx described it as “uncanny,” while Ronan Keating suggested Jess sounded as though he was “mimicking” the Age of Reason singer — without initially knowing about their family connection.
Rather than helping Jess secure a place in the competition, the familiar quality in his voice may have made it more difficult for the coaches to identify who he was as an individual performer.
However, according to the family source, one decision stood out to Farnham more than the others.
Why Richard Marx’s decision carried more weight
Farnham and Marx share a friendship and creative connection stretching back several decades.
They first met during Marx’s inaugural Australian tour in 1988 and later worked together on several songs. The Grammy-winning songwriter wrote The Reason Why, Treated This Way, Talent for Fame and So Long in Love for Farnham.
Because of that history, the source claimed Farnham had expected Marx to recognise Jess’s potential.
