The musician and actor is set to join the line-up for The Songs of John Farnham: A Living Legend, a one-night celebration of his father’s extraordinary musical legacy at Melbourne’s Rod Laver Arena on September 20.
But for Rob, this will be much more than another appearance alongside some of Australia’s biggest names.
A deeply personal tribute from son to father
Rob was recently announced among the additional artists joining the concert, alongside Vanessa Amorosi and former John Farnham vocalist Dannielle Gaha.
Organisers described Rob’s involvement as bringing a particularly personal connection to the night — one that will see a son helping celebrate the music and legacy of his father in front of thousands of fans.
According to the Herald Sun, Rob is preparing to perform one of his father’s songs in what will be an especially significant first for him, adding another emotional layer to an already deeply personal occasion.
John has long held a special place in Rob’s own musical story, making the upcoming performance something that extends well beyond the usual idea of a tribute.
For Rob, it is also a chance to honour the man behind the songs — his father.
A night built around John Farnham’s legacy
The September concert will bring together more than 120 artists and musicians, including a 38-piece orchestra, choir and the John Farnham Band.
Keith Urban, Jimmy Barnes, Tina Arena, Jessica Mauboy, Richard Marx, Human Nature and many others are among those taking part, while Celine Dion and Hugh Jackman are scheduled to contribute via satellite.
The artists appearing at the event were personally invited by John, according to the official announcement.
However, organisers have made one point clear: John himself will not perform. The evening is instead designed to celebrate his catalogue while raising funds and awareness for Head and Neck Cancer Australia.
The cause has an especially personal connection to John following his oral cancer diagnosis in 2022 and the major treatment that followed.
John has also made clear that he sees the night as something bigger than a celebration of himself, saying simply: “This night isn’t about me.”
A new chapter with a familiar bond at its centre
With so many celebrated performers preparing to honour John’s music, Rob’s involvement brings something no other artist on the bill can quite replicate.
