Just as Tom Steinfort and Sylvia Jeffreys had been settling into their latest run together at the Today desk, Samantha Armytage made an unexpectedly quick return. Only two days after revealing a painful setback, Sam was back beside Tom with a noticeably different look — and she soon found a cheeky way to make the most of it.
Samantha Armytage Returns to Today Just Two Days After Her Setback — And Her New Look Brings an Unexpected Twist
Another Change at the Today Desk
The Today desk has seen plenty of movement in recent weeks, and Tom Steinfort had most recently been appearing alongside Sylvia Jeffreys while Samantha Armytage was away.
Sylvia had stepped in beside Tom ahead of Samantha’s planned return, with the pair appearing together on the breakfast program during August.
But on Wednesday morning, the picture changed once again.
Samantha was back in the studio alongside Tom after a two-day absence — although there was one very noticeable addition to her usual on-air appearance.
A large grey brace was strapped around her injured leg.
For anyone who had seen Sam’s update only days earlier, however, the reason was no mystery.

A Painful Setback From an Unexpectedly Ordinary Moment
Earlier in the week, the 49-year-old presenter revealed that she had fractured her ankle over the weekend.
There was no dramatic television mishap or glamorous story behind it.
Sam explained that she had simply been taking out the rubbish one morning when she missed the bottom step and twisted her ankle.
“I wish I had a sexy story for you… but I don’t,” she joked while recounting what happened.
She even pointed out that she had been wearing runners rather than heels when the accident occurred.
Despite the ordinary circumstances, the injury itself was considerably more serious.
Sam said she had fractured her ankle in “a couple of places” and described damage involving the ligaments and bone.

She Was Already Determined to Get Back
Sam initially shared footage of herself resting on the couch with her injured foot elevated and supported by a brace.
But even then, she was already talking about getting back to work.
Acknowledging that many people were facing much tougher circumstances, Sam said she was trying to return to Today as quickly as possible.
“I am endeavouring to be back on air tomorrow for the Today show,” she told her followers.
She also joked that the team would simply have to work out how to deal with the boot on television.
Only two days after her injury announcement, Sam followed through.

Sam’s New Look Became Part of the Fun
Back beside Tom, Sam appeared in good spirits despite the painful setback.
She wore a blue-and-white striped top with grey trousers, while the sizeable grey brace remained clearly visible on her leg.
Rather than trying to make the unusual addition disappear, Sam seemed happy to embrace it.
She continued joking with her co-host and threw herself into the morning’s interviews, including a conversation with Olympic breakdancer Raygun.
And that particular guest soon gave Sam an opportunity that was almost too good to miss.
One Cheeky Moment With Raygun
After the interview, Sam shared a photograph of herself posing with Raygun on the Channel Nine set.
Both women playfully showed off their legs for the camera, with Sam’s brace taking centre stage.
“She breaks the dance and the internet… I break the ankle!” Sam joked.
It was a characteristically light-hearted response to what had been a genuinely painful few days.
Instead of allowing the injury to define her return, Sam turned the most obvious sign of it into part of the joke.
Her Return Comes at an Important Moment
There is also a bigger story developing around Sam’s latest appearances on Today.
Channel Nine has been trialling different hosting combinations, and Samantha’s previous stint alongside Tom Steinfort delivered an encouraging ratings result.
According to the report, their pairing helped lift the program’s national audience by around 60,000 viewers, representing an increase of roughly 10 per cent.
Those numbers have reportedly prompted Nine bosses to consider the pair for permanent appointments.
No permanent arrangement has been officially confirmed in the report, but Samantha’s return places her back beside Tom at a particularly interesting moment for the breakfast program.
A Very Samantha Way to Return
Two days earlier, Samantha Armytage had been on her couch explaining how one missed step while taking out the rubbish had left her with a fractured ankle.
By Wednesday, she was back behind the Today desk.
The brace made her return look rather different from what viewers are accustomed to seeing, but Sam appeared determined not to treat it too seriously.
And with a perfectly timed visit from Raygun giving her the chance to laugh at her own misfortune, a painful setback ended up adding an unexpectedly playful twist to her latest morning on Today.
