Long before the Today spotlight
For many viewers, Tim Davies is best known as the energetic presenter who has travelled across Australia for Today, delivering weather forecasts from beaches, small towns and some very unexpected locations.
But his career began very differently.
Davies started in radio in 2003 before moving through news, politics, courts, crime, sport and entertainment. When he joined Nine in 2014, much of his work was still taking place behind the camera as a newsroom producer.
Working around the darker side of the news
Before the lighter moments viewers would later associate with him, Davies had spent years close to much heavier material.
Looking back on his career while announcing his departure from Today, he recalled working in Nine’s Sydney newsroom covering areas including courts and crime.
It was a very different world from the role that would eventually make him one of breakfast television’s most familiar faces.
Then came one unexpected question
The change did not begin with a carefully planned television audition.
Davies has recalled being at Nine when someone suddenly asked him a remarkably simple question:
“Have you got a suit and tie?”
He said yes.
What came next was even more unexpected.
A return to the newsroom at 2AM
Davies was sent home to sleep and told to return at 2AM.
The reason? He was about to be thrown into reading a live national news bulletin — despite never having appeared on television before.
Davies later admitted the experience was daunting, but apparently he did well enough. As he jokingly recalled, they kept asking him to come back.
That unlikely early-morning opportunity became one of the moments that helped move his career from behind the scenes toward life in front of the camera.
A very different chapter followed
Over the years, Davies took on reporting and presenting roles across Nine before eventually joining Today.
The job would become dramatically different from the courts and crime reporting he had known earlier in his career.
Instead, he travelled constantly, met communities across the country and found himself regularly telling much lighter stories.
Reflecting on that contrast, Davies said the role allowed him to showcase what he described as “the absolute best of us.”
More than just being on television
That journey has now taken on extra meaning as Davies prepares to leave Today after seven years and more than 900 flights.
Nine confirmed that his final weather forecast will air on September 18, 2026, with Davies saying the time feels right to step back, take a break and prepare for whatever comes next.
Years after one simple question sent him back to the newsroom at 2AM, the career that followed became about far more than simply appearing on television.
