TC.AU.Danika Mason exposes Today show chaos while hiding life-altering milestones.

Danika Mason has spoken candidly about navigating the recent changes at Today. But amid the uncertainty, two major milestones have given this period of her life a very different meaning.

Danika Mason has been navigating one of the most eventful periods of her career — both on screen and away from it.

While Today has gone through a significant period of change in recent months, the Nine sports presenter has also been celebrating two major personal milestones: her first TV WEEK Logie nomination and the impending arrival of her first child.

And despite everything happening around her, Danika appears determined to keep her attention on the things she can control.

A nomination she never expected

Danika admitted she initially struggled to believe she had been individually nominated for the inaugural Bruce McAvaney Award for Most Popular Sports Presenter.

Having previously shared nominations with the wider Nine team, she initially needed producers to explain that this recognition was for her personally.

She now finds herself alongside an impressive field including Jelena Dokic, James Bracey, Eddie McGuire, Ricky Ponting and Bruce McAvaney himself.

For Danika, simply seeing her name among them has been enough to make her question how far her career has come.

The recognition follows years of work across major sporting broadcasts, from NRL coverage and State of Origin to the Australian Open, as well as her role on Today.

Sport remains where she feels at home

Despite speculation about possible opportunities created by the changing line-up at Today, Danika says she isn’t looking beyond her current role.

She remains especially passionate about major sporting events and the satisfaction that comes with working on productions such as State of Origin.

Rather than wondering whether another role might offer something more, Danika said she is happy with what she already does.

That attitude has also shaped the way she has approached the uncertainty surrounding Today.

How Danika has handled the Today changes

The breakfast program has faced considerable movement following Karl Stefanovic’s departure, while Sarah Abo is currently away on maternity leave.

A rotating group of presenters has since appeared behind the desk as Nine considers what comes next.

Danika described the initial adjustment as something the team simply had to work through, noting that Today has a large group of familiar presenters capable of stepping in.

Her approach has been deliberately practical.

“I can’t control what’s gone on.”

Rather than becoming emotionally caught up in decisions outside her control, Danika said she focuses on doing her job and moving through the changes with the rest of the team.

She also rejected the idea that television workplaces are somehow completely different from other jobs, pointing out that change happens everywhere and colleagues support one another through it.

An even bigger change away from television

At the same time, Danika and her fiancé, NRL player Liam Knight, are preparing to welcome their first child — a baby girl.

Their daughter is expected during the NRL off-season, something Danika has joked may even allow her to return for the opening round of the 2027 season, although she knows parenthood may ultimately dictate a different schedule.

Keeping the pregnancy private during its early stages proved especially difficult.

Danika experienced significant morning sickness and occasionally needed to briefly leave the Today set before returning to continue the broadcast.

During that period, colleagues including Jayne Azzopardi and Sarah Abo became valuable sources of advice.

Sarah, who recently became a mother herself, has regularly shared updates about baby Sonny with Danika as she prepares for what lies ahead.

For Danika, however, the overriding feeling is gratitude.

After months in which so much around her professional life has changed, she is now approaching perhaps the biggest transformation of all — while simultaneously receiving one of the most significant acknowledgements of her television career.
