For Sylvia Jeffreys and Peter Stefanovic, the arrival of their third child is more than another happy family milestone. It is the latest chapter in a journey that has already taken them through uncertainty, unexpected joy and the very different realities of becoming parents.
The couple announced on August 16 that they are expecting their third child — a baby girl — with their sons Oscar, six, and Henry, five, already preparing to become big brothers again.
A little girl joining the boys
Sylvia, 40, shared the news with a series of family photos, revealing the moment Oscar discovered that the baby would be a girl.
“Oh baby… number 3 is on the way and the boys are already taking their big bro duties seriously,” she wrote.
She joked that their daughter would have plenty of football merchandise and hand-me-downs waiting for her.
“Jump on board, baby girl. It’s fun here,” Sylvia added.
The announcement was followed by an outpouring of congratulations from their television colleagues and friends. For a family that has already experienced two very different paths into parenthood, the news carries an especially poignant sense of a new beginning.
The journey to Oscar was not an easy one
Sylvia has previously spoken openly about the emotional road she and Peter travelled before becoming parents.
Their first son, Oscar, was conceived through IVF after what Sylvia described as a difficult journey. In 2021, she spoke publicly about the emotional significance of the embryos created during IVF, explaining that there was a deep attachment to them long before they could become children.
For Sylvia, becoming a mother was therefore not something she ever took for granted.
Then Henry arrived in a completely different way
Just months after Oscar’s birth, Sylvia and Peter discovered they were expecting their second child.
Their son Henry was born in April 2021, making the couple parents of two boys only a little over a year apart. Sylvia later described the second pregnancy as unexpected and “spontaneous”, particularly meaningful after the challenges surrounding her first pregnancy.
At the time, Sylvia also spoke about the kind of family she and Peter hoped to create — one where their children would grow up surrounded by cousins, aunts and uncles, much as they had themselves.
That wish now looks closer to reality.
From two boys to a family of five
Oscar and Henry are no longer simply the little boys who once made Sylvia and Peter a family of four.
They are now preparing for a completely different role.
Their baby sister will arrive into a home already filled with two older brothers — and, judging by Sylvia’s announcement, they are embracing that responsibility with plenty of enthusiasm.
There is something particularly touching about seeing the journey come full circle: a couple who once wondered whether they would become parents now preparing to welcome their third child.
A family story that began through television
Sylvia and Peter’s story also has its roots in the television world.
Both built careers as journalists and presenters, and their professional paths eventually brought them together. The couple married in 2017 before welcoming Oscar in 2020 and Henry in 2021.
Today, Sylvia is a familiar face on Today Extra, while Peter has continued his career in Australian television news and presenting.
Their lives have changed considerably since they first became a couple — but the biggest changes have happened away from the cameras.
And now, a daughter
Sylvia’s pregnancy comes at a busy time professionally, with the presenter also involved in the wider Today line-up while Sarah Abo is on maternity leave.
But away from television schedules, ratings and red carpets, Sylvia and Peter are preparing for something much more personal.
Their family of four is about to become five.
